Frequently Asked Questions

How do I weigh my garage door accurately without breaking my scale?

First, disengage the electric garage door opener carriage by pulling the red emergency release cord. Lower the door manually until it rests about one foot above the floor. Place a standard mechanical or analog bathroom scale flat on the floor directly under the center of the door bottom rubber seal, then gently lower the door down onto the scale. Ensure lift cables remain slightly taut and read the scale. Repeat two or three times to verify an accurate weight within 2 to 3 lbs.

How do I identify spring winding direction and shaft location?

Look at the end of the spring where the wire terminates at the winding cone. If the wire curls in a clockwise direction, it is a Right Hand Wound (RHW) spring; if it curls counter-clockwise, it is a Left Hand Wound (LHW) spring. Under DASMA standards, Red Cones = Left Hand Wound (LHW) and must be mounted on the RIGHT side of the center support bracket (viewed from inside the garage looking out toward the driveway). Black Cones = Right Hand Wound (RHW) and must be mounted on the LEFT side.

How does increasing wire size increase cycle life without over-lifting the door?

A torsion spring's lifting force (IPPT) is proportional to wire diameter raised to the fifth power divided by active length ($d^5 / L$). If you increase the wire diameter ($d$) to make it thicker, the torsional bending stress ($\sigma \propto M / d^3$) drops dramatically. To prevent the thicker wire from producing excessive torque, the active spring length ($L$) must be lengthened proportionally. A longer spring made from thicker wire produces the exact same balance lift as the original factory spring, but endures 25,000 to 50,000 opening cycles instead of failing at 10,000 cycles.
